The SUSY MT system can be used online for German to English and Russian to German machine translation.

Automatic Indexing

Automatic indexing has always been a controversial field of research and practical application
in the area of (online or stand-alone) information systems. For mainframe computers, there are some research systems and
a few systems that are used in practice such as PASSAT by Siemens and AIR/PHYS developed by the
University of Darmstadt and used by Fachinformationszentrum Karlsruhe. The CTX system is a
research system developed at the Universität des Saarlandes on the basis of the SUSY machine
translation system. It uses the large German SADAW dictionary (142,000 entries) and produces
single-word descriptors and noun phrases. Like SUSY it is available on the UNIX platform.
Unlike SUSY, however, it is not available for the public at the moment, but may become so in the
near future. Among the automatic indexing systems developed for PCs the PRIMUS/IDX software
by SOFTEX seems worth mentioning.

Hypertext-Based Computer-Aided Learning

The LIFT system (Lern- und Informationssystem zur Förderung des Textverstehens) has been developed
at the Institute for Romance Philologies and the Institute for Information Science. Advanced
learners of French can download exercises that are supposed to help them read and understand
French texts. There are exercises on how to:

  • understand the gist of a text
  • answer questions concerning a text
  • extract the important key words
  • make conclusions after reading a text
  • etc.
The supporting texts are in German. The exercises have been implemented by means of the
TOOLBOOK software. If you want to download the exercises to your computer, set the 'load to disk' option
