SUSY
Das Saarbrücker Maschinelle Übersetzungssystem
The Saarbrücken Machine Translation System
- entwickelt / developed: 1972-1986 (Sonderforschungsbereich 100 "Elektronische Sprachforschung")
- Praxiseinsatz / practical application: 1981-1990 (Fachrichtung Informationswissenschaft)
- installiert auf Rechnern der folgenden Firmen / has run on computers of the following companies:
Control Data => Telefunken => Siemens => Nixdorf Targon => Solbourne => Silicon Graphics (1998)
- online von/from 1995 bis/until 2007
On your righthand side you can see the protocol of an example telnet session with SUSY (telnet is obsolete now, later SSH was used!).

W E L C O M E to the S U S Y MT system
at the Information Science Department
of the University of the Saar in Saarbruecken
You can now
- translate German - English and Russian - German
(translation German-English is possible for multiple
users)
- view the results of all stages of the translation
process (after the translation has been completed)
- browse through the German, English, and Russian
dictionaries (beware: only for one user at a time!)
You have to be aware
- that the NLP technology behind this all is around 20
years old and not completely stable and reliable
- that you won't be able to translate large portions of
text and that you'd better not try out linguistic
favourites like
"Uebersetzen koennen haette ich schon gewollt, aber das
bloede System hat mich nicht gelassen*"
- outsiders may have problems operating a system that has
been developed - over a period of nearly 20 years - on
mainframe computers and was originally meant for
internal studies only
- there is no support, and the (German) documentation -
in fact a collection of encoding sheets - was intended
for use by the insider, not the quick user outside
- that you must not type umlauts or 'ß'. Type e.g.
'Glueck', 'Baer', 'Fass' etc.
We nevertheless think it's worthwhile to face the
hardships of working with SUSY, because we feel that
- the user will get an impression of what MT can do and
what is problematic, even if a lot of errors will be
SUSY-specific.
The display option and the dictionary look-up give you a
chance to find out more about the relations between
lexical knowledge and the various stages of morpho-
syntactic analysis
- some components are really well worked out, e.g. the
German morphological analysis on the basis of 142.000
German word stems, the transfer lexicon with 350.000
entries, and the deep syntactic analysis (on the basis
of dependency grammar)
We advise you to
- start by testing simple structures and gradually try
out more complex ones (single words, compound nouns,
nominal structures, simple main clauses etc.)
- (in case of errors)
- vary the input (e.g. change the predicate)
- display intermediate results to trace the original
error
Leave the system by typing 'exit'.

1. Leave the system by typing 'exit'.
2. There are four commands: translate, susy_rg, display,
wobukor.
*** translate ***
You will be asked to type in German text to be
translated into English. A sentence must end in *
(instead of ".") or ! or ?
*** susy_rg ***
Same as translate, but for Russian-German translation
*** display ***
Parameters are
n/ where "n" is the requested intermediate
stage e.g. 12/ for "morphological analysis"
99/ lists all available stages
/ to quit
*** wobukor <lexicon name> ***
"Lexicon name" can be
sadaw (German lexicon)
deenwo (German-English lexicon)
rawo (Russian lexicon)
rudewo (Russian-German lexicon)
The first parameter must be "1" for "Bildschirm"
(terminal output).
The password is LESE. Please type capital letters, once
you have entered the lexicon. "Korrekturparameter"
is " " (blank). Other Parameters:
@F gives you the subsequent entry
@F<n> gives you the following n entries (be careful,
n should not be greater than 100!)
@V gives you the preceding entry
@@I (only in sadaw) gives a verbal description of
all noun, verb, and adjective entries. Above that
you will only be given the internal code
@R<n> you will only be shown the entries of type
n = 1 verb
n = 2 noun
n = 3 adjective
n = 32 function words
type @E to cancel the @R-restriction
blank (" ") to quit
3. The Technotran transliteration table:
a = A b = B v = V g = G d = D e = E zh = J
z = Z i = I j = 1 k = K l = L m = M n = N
o = O p = P r = R s = S t = T u = U f = F
ch = X ts = Q tch= C sh = W shtch = 5
y = Y eh = 3 ju = H ja = 4
m.znak = 6 tv. znak = 7

SU5ESTVOVANIE BYT6 3TOT NAZVAT6 NAWLI XOROWI1 POD7EM
